In the course of navigating the freeways throughout CA, you may have seen CHP stop or slow and cut back and forth across lanes in what appears to be an erratic fashion. This is often done when there is a hazard on the road that needs to be removed. This may go on for a minute or two before the officer turns off the lights on the patrol car and continues on his way. For those having never experienced this so called “traffic break” you may be taken by surprise and not know if you should continue driving or pull over.

Traffic break guidelines are found in the DMV Driver handbook – Special Driving Situations – Traffic Breaks:“During a traffic break….Slowly begin to decrease your speed. Do not slow abruptly unless it is necessary to avoid a collision. Slow to the same speed as the officer while keeping a safe distance from the patrol vehicle ahead of you….Do not attempt to drive past the patrol vehicle. Do not accelerate until the patrol vehicle has turned off its emergency lights and traffic conditions ahead allow the return to normal speeds.”
