About Sutter County
Established in 1842, John Sutter’s Hock Farm became the first large-scale agricultural settlement in Northern California. The farm was composed of grain, cattle, orchards and vineyards. Upon California gaining statehood in 1850, the county was named in honor of John Sutter and at the time included Placer County and a portion of land now belonging to Colusa County.
